The ‘718’ designation was given to the new Boxster product launched in 2016 and later the Cayman, as a nod to the success of Porsche Flat 4 engines in the Fifties and Sixties.
The chassis number of ‘718’ product means they are actually a ‘982’ but the denomination hasn’t gained any traction and we all call them ‘718’s’.
The original ‘718’ was launched in 1957 as a successor of the legendary 550 Spyder, amongst its many victories the 718 won the Targa Florio twice and scored a class victory at the Le Mans 24Hrs.
